Default My kingdom for 12 volts

No fishing for me since a week ago Saturday. Last trip out with 30 mins to go, my ultrex told a dump. Started licking heel to toe and couldn’t change the speed. Using remote, it would turn when locked but still no speed control. No worries, figured bad board which is fairly common and PTG Outdoors to the rescue.

Stripped electronic and fishing gear and dropped boat. Next day, they report board is fine but one of lithiums is bad.

    Uh oh.

I pick up and check. I have 2 Ionic 100 ah about 2 years old. Sure enough, on volt meter, less than 2 volts from one. App shows 14.2. Charge on my NOC and output is 14.2. Run TM for a short time and back to under 2 while app shows 14 and good health with 99% charge. No worries though, I know how ionic stands behind their batteries.

Called customer service and working the hour had return RMA and labels. Packed and shipped same day.

Waiting on repair and replacement now.

With that said, I’m about to go stir crazy. There is only so much grass you can cut and clean up around the shop a fella should be expected to do without a fishing trip to break things up.

While I’m at it, I ordered another 100 ah to replace my 50 ah for electronics. On an 8 hour trip, sometimes I’ll use 70% of the capacity and I’ve got a feeling that next time I go, it’s liable to be a 16 hour trip.

A lot like the old Wannabe... except with fewer bad words. And Karate chop action. But, yes, still purtier than you.

Electronics do some weird stuff when they undervolt. My experience in launching vehicles has me in the habit of checking the battery voltage as one of three first steps of troubleshooting because the number of times people end up draining the battery on test vehicles—people just can’t understand the concept that batteries cannot supply an infinite amount of power, although have run into the occasional defective battery.

When I switched to LFPs, I kept my lead acid batteries in the boat and switched over to either batteries through a switch. I refuse to let a bad battery keep me from fishing.

When I switch to Lithiums, I'm planning to have my trolling motors batteries and electronic batteries be the same so that I can just move my electronics battery over to the trolling motor side if that is the failure. Since I have a carbed 2-stroke outboard (1985 Evinrude 150 XP) with stator charging system, I'll have to still have an AGM for starting, and that battery can be my backup for electronics if my electronics battery fails. I remember a simpler time when I used to run a couple of smaller fish finders plus live well on a starting or dual purpose 12V group 24 lead acid and a pair of group 24 lead acids for the trolling motor. My Skeeter SF-175 was not made to run 5 group 31 batteries as I often hear about from the larger boats running 4 large screens and 36V trolling motor systems.

I run a 100 ah 36v lithium on my trolling motor. I kept I deep cycle 12 volt as a spare in my boat along with the 12 volt motor battery. There’s also a set of jumper cables and a jump pack. I’ve had my electronics run the starting battery too low to start the motor. Now I have a spare in the boat just in case

That's great Ionic stands behind their product. I kind of smirk when all the lithium manufacturers boast a 10 year warranty. As far as voltage test that great and all, but a load test is what I rely on. Even then you can get false readings, been let down a many times by good voltage but low amperage.

I run 2 36 volt 60 amp hour lithiums on my trolling motor, 1 100 amp hour lithium for my electronics and an odessey agm for my boat and so far no problems. I don't have to charge them every trip either.

I’m like Speck I keep a charged up jump pack and a pair of jumper cables in my boat. We learn the hard way sometimes. 4 batteries. Regular for cranking and 2 12 v regular on trolling motor that I will soon change to lithium. I also have 1 12 v battery dedicated to electronics. I heard you can run off of the 100 ah lithium 24 volts to a voltage regulator so you could run electronics in a bind. Anybody heard of that?

Yep. Basically it’s an inverter. It’s less efficient but would get you by in a bind.
