I figured this thread was going in a whole different direction, on which I shouldn't have to experience in at least 20 years. This a lesson in geezertimology.

I have had several lower units (foots) cracked because Ieft them tilted up.

I bet they had water inside the lower unit. No way to crack an open container because there is no pressure applied to it when the ice swells. Like in a 5 gallon bucket. The water/ice swells up but doesn't burst the bucket.
Try a simple test tonight. Put a mark on the inside of an open container, bucket, jar, water trough, etc. Fill the container up to where the mark is barely visible. When the water freezes, you won't see the mark in the container because the ice will swell up the container, but it won't burst it because it isn't sealed and no pressure will be applied to the walls of the container.
The hub of your lower unit can only hold a small amount of water without draining itself out. You can't fill one up with a water hose because of the trim angle. It'll drain out the bottom side of the angle first.
If you guys feel more comfortable draining them, by all means Do It. Less worry and stress is worth it I guess.![]()

So much knowledge - so little time!!
If we did what was most important in life there would be a shortage of Bibles.................and fishing poles
Best thing to do is move to Miami or Los Angeles. Then, we wont have to worry about this or worry about these big words!
