Hang in there. Cranking is easy. Trial and Error is key. Also location. Don't be afraid to stop reel up and move a few miles and get back at it. Sardis is huge. Memory is your key to succes.

Yeah I like to be on the water early pulling cranks myself, don't give up, go fish, come back, ask questions, go back fishing, when you get it you will have it.

Actually, a better way to think of it is as a "right triangle" with the line being the long edge. the tip of your pole is at angle "ab" and the lure is at angle "bc". Acording to the pythagoreum theory...yada yada yada..... the bottom angle is actually "x" feet below the tip of the rod. So if you have your line set for 15 feet out, and your rod tip (point "ab") is 2 feet out of the warter, then the lure (point "bc) is actually only 13 feet under the water. That bottom angle is going to be 15 feet below the upper anlge regardless of how much line is above/below the water........ Lets say these two triangles are the exact same.....the only difference is how high above the water line point "ab" (your rod tip) is located. The only thing that really changes is the location of the other two points. All three sides stay the exact same length... More or less ( friction and resistance make a little impact as well).
I think the line actually does this.last year a boat 75 ft away caught my line when I was pulling 125 ft back
Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.
