Not sure about this crankin' thing

First time trying pulling cranks was last summer. Maybe caught 10 fish between 3 trips. Went to Sardis today for the first crank pullin' of the year. I got a late start. Fished from Clear to Toby twice. Cranks in the water at 1030. FINALLY hooked up on a fish at 130! Another hr later that was still the only fish so I headed home. I was seeing fish (or what I thought was fish) on the graph between 14-17' in 25-30' of water. Frustrating to say the least. I've seen alot of people having success pulling cranks. Apparently it just not my cup of tea. Lol. Im ready for the fall to get back to drowning minners! Haha

They will come up some to hit a crankbait but they wont go down.....set your line length to pull your cranks a foot or two above the fish you are seeing...pull them at 1.6 to 1.8 mph

Had the speed right. I was fishing 3 different depths all within the range of what I thought was fish. Maybe that was the problem? Trying to put it right on them instead of a foot or 2 above. Idk.

Couple of things to consider. If they don't bite where your fishing, move. The crappie at Sardis aren't deep. The undesirable fish will be in the band of fish you see at the 15 foot level. Remember your FF never saw a fish it didn't like. The crappie are the tiny specs you see above the thick band. Use your FF for GPS tracking and speed control and target the 10-12 fish regardless of how deep the water his. That means you should only have 40-60 feet of line out from where it enters the water if your pulling a Bandit 300 with mono. If your using a color that's not working ...change it. Take a range of colors with you and don't forget about chrome if its sunny. Good luck.

Hasn't been a very good crank bite at Sardis this week.....at least not for me or anyone I know. Bite will pick up as the summer wears on. Really think they need to gate open the spillway to fire them up.

The hotter it seems to get the better the bite from what I have seen

Keep going. You will figure them out. This is my second summer pulling cranks. It is sure a learning experience.

So if my okuma says 75 and say it's 25' before my line enters the water I actually only have 50' out?

Agree with the slow bite comment.

I fished Sardis for 4 hours Monday. I got a late start at 10:30 and caught 3, all solid 13" fish. Not enough action to build a pattern.

Tried Enid for an hour and caught 5, but only two keepers.

Yep, the line that's out of the water doesn't count. It might as well still be on your reel.
