Too much of a good thing can often lead to burnout. Eventually, you stop enjoying the very thing you grew to love. This has been my case regarding shooting for some time. I spent so much time pulling the trigger and preparing to keep myself safe and defend my country that I lost the true enjoyment I found in shooting. I spent a ton of time instructing, lost the majority of the hearing in one of my ears, and tested 100's of weapons platforms. All of this eventually lead to the demise of my enjoyment.
Forcing myself to get back to something I used to love, I had my dad construct a shooting range at my house last year. Although I still shoot paper targets, I have found more enjoyment out of shooting interactive materials. As of late, glass bottles have been the key to holding my interest and helping to get my daughter more involved. Kids don't want to shoot paper. They want to watch stuff blow up!
Last night, Abby and I decided that we needed to break some glass. Papa was on his way over and I was sure he would be all too happy to put a hundred rounds through his EDC (Every Day Carry) gun. Abby shot glass and clays until she got tired and then headed to the house. Dad and I set out shooting glass, clays, paper, oil drums, paint cans, garbage cans, and any other thing I had laying on the range.
Then the good idea fairy came! Dad picked up a machete I had in the back of my side by side and proceeded to head down range. I knew instantly what he wanted to do however I told him to return my favortie machete and instead use the hatchet I had.
I've never tried this trick before last night. Take one look at the head of a knife or axe and you will quickly understand how hard it is to "split a bullet". We set two clays on each side of the hatchet. Unfortunately, we really didn't know where to put them. It is a guessing game.
Originally I was going to start out with my 1911 however dad had the idea to use Abby's single shot bolt, youth model pink, 22 cricket. Anyone ever tried to shoot one? If so, you will know how close you have that gun in your shoulder and how awkward it is!
I was at a distance of 30 feet. My first shot went just right. My second shot hit the head of the axe, split in two, broke one of the clays, and landed just under the other one. Could I really have just split a .22 bullet on an axe head the thickness of a couple sheets of paper? Offhand at 30 feet with a pink youth gun I have shot once?

After this, I attempted the same thing with my 1911 .45ACP. I managed to hit the axe head twice out of an 8 round magazine. One bullet skimmed one side, one skimmed the other. I hit it two more times on my second mag with the same results. Understanding how big a 45 is compared to a 22 makes it all the more rewarding to do what I did!
Did I enjoy it? Heck yes. I have passion again in something I used to love to do. Sometimes we need to introduce new things into our everyday life in order to make them fun again. Am I as good as I used to be? Probably better!
on my second cup this morning.
nice to see warm weather for a change
Just pulled up to the job, I'm not much of a coffee drinker but these smoothie drinks I make sure are good. I've been blending blueberries, pears and strawberries with 100% Concord grape juice. I also have been experimenting with this detoxing recipe mixed in the smoothie, it consists of 100% organic lemon juice, brags raw organic apple cider vinegar, organic cayenne pepper and celeon cinnamon
I did the detox before , now I'm adding it to the smoothie. I feel a boost of energy and it keeps me pretty full longer so I spend less and I'm not eating all that fast food.

Makes my guts gurgle. Not sure I could go to work if I drank that.
Steve stopped over a couple of days ago and before he left I showed him the garage sale tackle box I bought Saturday. He picked up a lure that looked like some type of novelty lure that you would buy for a kid. Looks like a whale with it's tail raised behind it. He said I should check the value on it because it was a Heddon. Well, I did and it ended up being a Heddon Hi Tail which were made for 2 years from 1961-1963. It's worth around 25.00 and could be worth 100.00 in better shape with the box. Good eye, Steve.
Good shooting! Years ago, when my kids were young, we spent a lot of time plinking with the pellet gun and .22. Empty beer cans did it for us. I had a Marlin Golden 39A lever action .22 with iron sites that was unbelievably accurate. My eyes were better back then and I could punch holes in the center of a dime with that gun. Couldn't do it off hand but with a decent rest, no problem.Head shot a lot of squirrels with it. My daughter could out shoot her brother but couldn't pull the trigger on a living creature. She stuck to shooting cans.
