I did some investigating a number of years ago on what the legal means would be to drop structure in lakes. It requires some work to procure the proper permission. To begin with you must supply the DNR with a sketch of the structure including a materials list. You also have to indicate the body of water and location in that body where you wish to place the structure. Then, and probably the most difficult, is you have to get permission from the land owner who has "Riparian Rights" to the land underneath the water where your structure will be placed. Here's an excerpt from a law firm website that puts in in lay terms:

Michigan has unique rules which are used to decide disputes about waterfront property. For example, the owner of property on an inland lake has title to the bottomland beginning at the lakefront. For rivers and streams, the ownership extends to the "thread” or center of the flowing water. Ownership of inland lakes is usually pie shaped and extends to the center point of the lake. The other river or lake front owners have a right to navigate and fish over the privately owned bottomland.

Needless to say, I gave up on the idea.

    Good find Don,

Glad Kevin asked... I do know a lot of people that live on lakes that will put their Christmas trees on the ice in the winter time. That seems to be pretty popular and the DNR seems to not have a huge issue with it but anything more than that seems like a nightmare in paperwork!

Yup. Would definitely be easier when you are the land owner.

Wonder how it would be treated if the land was federal or state.

If I was looking at 12' crappie rods...
having never owned a long rod and only used UltraLite stuff thus far, would the difference between a 60$ rod and 30$ rod be noticeable?
