There are a few of you hard core fisherman that need to invest in heated garages.

Jimmy: Were staying home this winter. Daughter is having some health issues. I do plan on ice fishing this winter. Lakes around here ar froze over now. Looks like we'll be fishing by Thanksgiving. Did you want to make a plan to fish?

Is Humminbird vs Lowrance a Ford vs Chevy debate?

i want to put new electronics on my boat for spring, and have been reading about both brands. I read a lot of people talking up their Humminbird units on one thread, then discussing all the issues in another. I hear the talking up, but don't hear as many issue stories, with the Lowrance.
When I look at online retailers like BassProShop or Cabelas, the Humminbirds seem to have noticeably lower customer ratings.

Does one have "Must Have" qualities the other doesn't?

I want a console unit and a front mounted unit.

What say ye? Ford or Chevy?

I have birds. 798c si units to be exact. They are not the newer ethernet models, but are tied together to share data thru interlink. I have not had issues with mine, but to qualify that, I also probably use their capabilities a lot less than most do so consider that. Jimmy and Kev both run Lowrance.

I also have lowrance. I've had the opportunity to play with both units and honestly they both have pros and cons. I'm used to the display of lowrance so the birds were hard for me to use. In my opinion, the birds side imaging and 360 display are more crisp than lowrance but lowrance seems to do more things. I've looked into the birds simply for their capabilities to link with the terrova i-link system. With this, you can use you fish finder to control the terrova, follow break lines, or keep your boat a certain distance from a break. Only drawback is the i-link break line stuff must be in the map software. My fear is the lakes I fish wouldn't have the right maps. Gary (fishing couple) has it on his boat.

Because of my familiarity with lowrance, my new boat will have HDS 10 at the helm and HDS 7 on the bow. The touch is nice too but I am familiar with the non touch.

Also, buy from bbgmarine.com as they are way cheaper than the box stores. I'll be ordering my new ones as soon as my boat cover and air ride seats are in and I can bring the boat home.... Cats out of the bag now!

I did a ton of research on both Lowrance and Humminbird for a big screen sonar/GPS unit for my big lake cruiser. It really did become a Ford/Chevy thing. My brother-in-law has a Lowrance and loves it. I bought a Humminbird 898c HD. I had trouble from the git go in deep (over 80') water. Humminbird customer service was top notch...advice, new transducer, and eventually a new head unit. As it turned out the trouble was in the wiring. I was getting interference at the dash where the power line from the unit connected to to fused board. Had it rewired directly to the batteries at the transom and it worked fine. I "heard" that Lowrance customer service was poor. I think both companies make great units, very comparable in many ways. I do own several small (one portable) Huminbird "fish finders" for my other boats..LOL...and they are super little units. One other comment. IF you get a side imaging unit, consider that the transducer MUST be mounted low enough to prevent the lower unit on your boat motor from blocking one side's signals. That is the case with the IO on my cruiser. The transom mounted transducer is blocked from sending/receiving signals on the port side because the lower unit is down and blocks it out. I could have opted for a through-hull transducer but didn't like the idea of cutting a hole in the bottom. If you're looking for a front (trolling motor) mount, what I just said is moot. I hope this helps you out. Good luck!
