I am confused at first you said the motor casing was hot and then later you said the motor wasn't hot. Sounds like the coils could be breaking down in the motor.

i have a 35lb thrust motor guide bill dance edition bow mount trolling motor.....i will be out on the lake and after running it off and on for about two hours or so it starts acting like its weak like the battery is about dead. i just got a new marine battery and when i got home it was still at 77 percent charged. when it was acting like it was dead i felt the actual motor casing to check if it was burning up and it didnt feel hot...checked the wireing at the battery it was not hot either....the wiring i have going to the motor is pretty small so i thought it was the wire but if the wire is not hot then i doubt its the wire. i thought it was not carrying enough current for that long of use but it was not hot so i dont think thats the problem... i really think its the trolling motor even though it was not hot. i think it may just be getting worn out. i dont know how old it is or anything i bought it for 50 bucks. ......anyone ever had this problem or could give me any advice.

The love for fishing is one of the best gifts you can pass along
You may need to take the prop off and check to make sure no fishing line is wrapped around the shaft underneath the prop. You can't really tell until the prop is off. Fishing line can also cut the seals out of a trolling motor so it doesn't hurt to check from time to time to make sure.![]()
Be safe and good luck fishing
Sorry the motor casing was never hot and there was no fishing line in prop but there has been before
If it is possible, move battery to front of boat and hook motor directly to battery for a trip. That should help determine if it is a wiring problem. You should be running 8 gauge wire at a minimum. Also you have a reostate in the motor head or foot pedal that could be overheating causing the same problem.

Look for overheated wires in foot control, had to redo mine twice so far.--shu

What battery do you have?
After you stop using a battery, it will recover a decent amount of capacity, so your battery could have gotten low and then recovered. The best thing to do is to measure the voltage on the battery terminals and as close as you can get to the motor in the wiring (with the motor on) when you first notice it is weaker.
wow thanks for all the great advice guys. i think i have 10ga wire running to it....and i do recall one time under foot control something was hot but i could not quite pinpoint what it was....i will have to take a better look at foot control and maybe re work some wires.
