5 years old, 45 hours a year not too bad, The question is how was it run? If it was not beat up and properly serviced should last for years. My friends 1984 Johnson 88SPL is well over 2000 hours (he bought it as a 15 year old boat, no hour meter, we installed one and last week I remember seeing it at 1890hrs) Other than a water pump, a tilt trim pump, a few tune ups and religious service nothing has been done other than hitest non ethanol fuel and premium 2 cycle oil.
Boat starts everytime, is a bit cold natured and gets us where we want to go and most importantly always gets us back to the ramp.
IMO if it has a hot foot, pass it by. Otherwise, a compression check on a warm engine should tell you all you need to know.

Bought an 05 with 484 hrs on it couple weeks back. Payed a dealer $30 to put it on computer....had 20 hrs at 4 to 5 thousand rpm. The rest was at low idle. These motors have a brain on em nowadays and they can tell if it has been worked on ,has had codes thrown up or the likes.....if the foot oil is clean,it runs good and compression checkout is good and the computer printout sounds right buy it !!

Everything joekiller said. The four strokes last and last. That is no hours. Mine in 1 year old next month and will have 170 hrs on it. The computer print out will show you everything. The difference between a four stroke and 2 stroke lasting is similar to that of motor cycles. You will not find a cruzer bike in a 2 stroke, because they just don't hold up over time. If you have a dirt bike with 20,000 miles, you really have something. If you have a cruzer with a four stroke and 20,000 miles, you dont think to much about it. I have several commercial fisherman buddies that live in the salt, they are getting 5,000 hrs on their four strokes, and trading them in. they did not die, just traded them in.
