Default Here is the plan to upgrade our site software...FAIL

We will be taking a backup of the current site tomorrow evening.

We think the conversion process will now take 4 days to load the 22 years worth of data (down from 12 days, yay). So Sunday the site will be ALL NEW EVERYTHING, but will have old data from the beginning of the forum through to tomorrow evening (Wednesday). We will loose everything posted on the current site from Wednesday evening all the way till the new site software is back up, which is planned for Sunday. I will still have access to that lost data, and could copy posts to the new software if necessary, but I would like to keep that to a minimum.

Hope this makes sense. Please let me know if it don't.

To access the new site you will have to click "Login", and "I forgot my password". Reset your password to anything you like, and you'll be in. The new software will not accept your old password because it uses a different password encryption method.

You can always get ahold of me though email at [email protected] if you have problems.

so if we want the same password can we change it now and then change to the original later after the reset?

You don't need to change your password now, just change it to whatever you want on the new system.

Slab has done a great job of thinking through the migration which means it probably will go very well. Won't know for sure until we emerge from the fog on Sunday. My next comment is for us end users and it runs along the line of "tell Slab where some past help desk jockey hurt you." Our questions reveal a lot of the inanity and dumb-firetruckery we were subjected to in the past on other sites. Slab's process seems to be about as user-friendly as we can get. Kudos to Slab and the team.

Quick "for what it's worth": I started the first ever Helpdesk at WW Grainger in the early 1980's. I previously had been a mainframe computer operator. It was a great job, met and helped so many people, in fact I met my wife while helping the VP of IT on an issue. Best day of my life. Anyway, it was a great spring board. I figured out what the best jobs were, and then worked my way into becoming a Mainframe Systems Programmer. Great career which also led to me hiring Adam, who taught me tons about Unix/Linux and now heads our conversion effort here on Crappie.com. Life is good.
