While I do apologize for highjacking this thread .... it is within the same subject content. I just question the actual sizes of some of these hooks being suggested/mentioned. I mean REALLY ...1/0 ?? 2/0 ?? 3/0 ?? When I Bass fished, I never used a hook over a 1/0 size ... and that was for 7" worms & 4" craws (& on mono line that was never below 12lb test).
Exactly what size minners or plastics are these hooks being used on !!! There's a big difference in a #1 & #2 hook vs a 1/0 & 2/0 size hook. Are we talking the same style hooks (Aberdeens) or is there a significant size discrepancy in the different styles, such that a 2/0 in a particular style of hook is equal to or similar in size to a #2 Aberdeen ??

Matzuo sickles on all jigheads. For a 1/32 oz head I use a #4, 1/16 oz head = #2, 1/8 oz head = #2 or #1, 3/16 or 1/4 oz head = #1.

#1 , #1/0 for minnows and teasers. And SatDocs sickle jigs. The few round heads I pour for myself 1/6 #1 and 1/8 1/0 all sickle hooks. Same number and size as bass hooks.

2/0 aberdeen hooks with medium shiners or big blackheads, and I have caught some incredibly small crappie on them. Crappie have big mouths, and I think you hook a lot more of them on the bigger hook. I fished with a guide once who used #6 hooks, and we missed a lot more fish than I think we would have with the bigger hooks.
I would imagine that it all depends on the water you fish and to some degree if you are catching White crappie VS Black Crappie. And some of you guys must be on better water with larger than normal average size fish.
I fish some very small jigs when the bite requires it with down to a size #10 hook. I frequently use a 1/32 oz with a bronze #8.
I prefer Tru Turn panfish hooks in bronze for minnows and use #4's for open water and #6's for heavy cover.
I did have some 1/32 and 1/16 oz heads made with BN sickle hooks. I used a #6 in the 1/32 and a #4 in the 1//16.
I do not like the gold hooks and basically won't fish with them using live bait or jigs..
I fish pretty clear water with mostly black crappie.
I like the #2 and #4 sickle hooks my self
