Last year had to fish #8 and started to like them. One thing I noticed on smaller hooks is that I tend to hook them in the upper lip more often. If you get a hook set there you almost can't lose a fish.

#2 for casting jigs & #4's for tightlining. I agree that opening the hook helps. You might also try sickle hooks because they have a bigger gap which gives you a better bite. Catch a lot of them in the top of the mouth.
