Well crappie are sight feeders so it helps to be just clear enough for them to see your bait without being so clear as some arkansas lakes where they can see the boat and spook more easily from heavy line. So lightly stained water is best.

But simple way to answer this is with an example. Caddo Mooringsport is a good one becuase everyone who fishes it can attest when rain comes and muddies that narrow pinch in Caddo Lake with runoff the bite turns off. It can be slamming pulling in limits then the water gets stained after a rain and they shut completely down. See arches all over the sonar and you know they are still there but most likely can't see to eat...

Now Mississippi folks are going to pop in here with tails of slabs out of chocolate milk but I can only answer from my experiences.
