I have gotten a couple PMs asking about rod holders/positioning. So I added a picture of my rig fishing 12 poles...

BUMP IN THE NAME OF FALL!
Thought maybe some new members might get more use out of this post with the fish moving deep again for the winter.

Ahhh, 12 poles, huh? Oh my, I've got only 8. Fishing tackle store, here I come!... See you at D'arbonne. Ray
Proud to be an AMERICAN fisherman!
Great post Markham, I've never did any such fishing or even seen any done. It is something not done down here at the bottom of the state mainly because of the lack of deep water. I do remember about 10 years back fishing while with my brother-in-law during the cold weather of Feb, he got tired of casting and just let his line drag behind the boat and caught a fish. He repeated the action 3 or 4 times and caught fish. He was using a bobber and a jig. Now I was catching off the front of the boat pitching and casting like I always did and the though of dragging lures never came to mind. Since I've joined CDC I've wondered if I have been passing up a great way to catch fish in the cold of winter down here. I'll be giving it a try soon. Thanks for the detail explanation.

Thank you.
Great information you shared. So glad that you bumped it back on for those of us that have just recently started the learning curve. Just picked up the stainless to mount rod holders yesterday. Have never fished with a rod holder, but can't wait to try it. Was really glad to learn the knowledge of keeping the rods fore and aft, as opposed to setting out to the sides, to keep the bounce subdued. Very timely information to have when you are going to mount T-bars tomorrow.
Keep it coming professor. I'd like to pre-register for the 202 class.
Thanks again Markham

Very good post!! Informative with visual aids. I to fish that way.
Mark thanks for all the info. I am really excited about fishing Larto this winter. I am like Paw Paw Gene living South of I-10 I have never done this before but I sure am willing to give it a shot. I wonder if I could drift with a boat blind and a decoy spread behind the boat; shoot some ducks and catch some slabs at the same time.:D
I would also like to tell everyone THANKS, it sure helps pass the time out here in the Big Blue Pond reading the stories and tips on this site.
Come on NOV 18th.
Leave two for seed. Bruce
Markham,
Down here were Paw Paw and I are at we have a area that has several lakes that are 6-8' deep. There is a bayou that has some 15 to 24' water in it that connects lake Verret, Grassy and Purlude. I have tried a couple of times drift fishing but holding a couple of rods. The little Hummingbird I have (cheap) shows fish. The water is not very clear, about 6 to 10" of clairty. This pass weekend I caught 2 goo by doing this but no sac-a-lait. I guess my question is does the water have to be clear. The water is heavily stained to light muddy. There are some bayous that have clear water but only 6-8' deep. I have caught them slow trolling these canals. I just feel these fish would stack up in his deep bayou. Any help would be nice. Thanks for the post.
Being from sola and now in Ruston, I welcome any information on vertical/drift fishing. I am very comforable fishing shallow for those pre-spawn "pigs" in southern lakes and the spillway (basin). I've caught WP with their fins at the surface. I'm really enjoying the deeper fishing. More depths equal more variables to consider, all the better. I am learning from Roger "The Hammer" Smitherman. Seems that they might as well come up and float when he's in the channel. Really a good fisherman. I haven't got past 2 poles, 1 in each hand. I really like this method as I can't get enough of the almighty "thump" when he shows up. This is a good fit for me but I'm sure the spider rigs are fun as well. Again, good post. JN
