    Question Going Today

Hey fellows I took a day off work today and I want to hook a few slabs. Where is the bite on Dale Hollow, Green River, Barren, Cumberland. I really want to catch some crappie so any help would be great.

    Thanks
    Tony

I see you gravitated over here from Fishin.com :D (saw your post about these lakes over there :D )

Read down thru some of the more recent posts, and you might find some Green River info. Can't help you on Dale or Barren, and can only tell you that I "heard" they were catching Crappie at Cumberland ... in the brush at the backs of creeks.
Don't know as you'll get much response, this late in the game. Wish you'd have posted your question a few days ago. Might have had time for some of our members to answer. As it is, by the time you get some replies ... you probably should have already been there

i just got back from dale, fish have not spawned yet and water is 70 degrees, hey cp, with high water fronts and lake turnover can they just not do their thing? i have talked to dennis bowers often the last couple of weeks and he would know if they were spawning, he said the few fish he caught middle of last week had very imature eggs, i caught a gill that was busting with eggs, we searched high and low and ended up with 8 crappies with only one real dark male black nose keeper, everybody i spoke to even the people that were fishin for smallies were crying the blues.

I just don't know much about Dale ... but, from what I've seen & experienced with a couple of local lakes, and Watts Bar .... I don't think the main spawn has taken place yet. I think this weather has got them messed up, again, this year. They want to come in and spawn, for the most part, but the weather is working against them. If conditions improve and stabilize ... there could be a charge of the light brigade spawn, for several different species at once. Water temps would have to get above 75deg, and stay there, to bring a halt to the Crappie spawning.
I've known White Crappie to not come in and spawn, in East TN, until almost mid May ... used to always head to Barkley around the 21st of April, looking for spawning White Crappie ... Taylorsville Crappie have spawned in early to mid May ... and now, after todays trip, I see Black Crappie trying to spawn this late (Cedar Creek), and White Crappie still trying to get to the banks at Herrington. It's this wacky weather, I tell ya :p ... when all the conditions get right, Katie bar the door, but until then, any ONE condition gets out of whack ... and the whole party could be cancelled.

I really can't think of any two years, heck ... even ONE year ... in the last few years, where the lake conditions & weather patterns have been stable & prime for a real good spawn (in any of several lakes that I keep track of, even if I don't get to fish them consistantly) !!

It could be another one of those "off" years ... where some portion do get to spawn, and the rest run out of time. I guess we'll see ... it's all gonna depend on what happens over the next two weeks.

    Post Report

Well I ended up on Cumberland Friday and didn't see a single crappie. I did however manage to boat 4 bass one was about 5 lbs the other three were in the 2 1/2 - 3 lb range. Evidently they like crappie minnows or are gorging for the spawn. They were all pre-spawn and full of eggs. I also caught about 10 red eye that were full of eggs. Yesterday went with my wife to Dale Hollow (Wisdom Boat Dock) and fished for about 5 hours and caught a bluegill and a small (6") kentucky bass. Not a crappie to be seen, even though the cover in that area looked great. I am completely unfamiliar with both Cumberland and Dale so I was going where I'd been told that the crappie come to spawn. I used to fish Rough and Nolin and could always catch crappie but since I moved down this way I haven't found a good spot or an area that looks right yet. I have caught a few in Green and Barren but the ones from Green River were 6-7" and Barren is just like the name says Barren _ no good stick-ups or cover. I know they are there from some of the folks telling me they catch them but just hadn't found the right spot yet. I will find me a spot one of these days. Yall take care and I'll see you on the water.

    Tony
