Default OOOOPS!! I may have messed up!

Got out on KY Lake for a couple of hours Wednesday afternoon with a friend of mine from Michigan. We trolled cranks and did OK, had 14 decent keepers but no really nice crappie. We did have some cats, a keeper sauger, and one very nice yellow perch that hit one of my hand-painted cranks. Since the buddy was from Michigan and had fished for perch all his life, he was excited to be taking all the fish home with him. We measured the perch and it was almost 14 inches long and as big around as a tennis ball. I absolutely didn't think about it possibly being close to the state record, just the largest I've ever caught.

I may have messed up bad by not having it weighed and checking into the record books.

Just checked the record----1 pound 7 oz. Probably close but no cigar. Won't matter now anyway.

Does anyone every target them, or just catch them while crappie fishing?

I'll speak for myself, I have no idea where to start looking for them since I catch then so rarely. Most of the ones I've caught were when I was either jig fishing or longlining for crappie or when I was fishing for bedding gills or redear. Kind of like sauger now. I used to troll for them in earnest but it got so hard to catch them anywhere but below some of the dams in the wintertime that most of us quit fishing for them. It is a pleasant surprise to catch one keeper size any more.

I catch 2 or 3 every year while spider riggin with minners...altho, I've never caught one much over 9-10 inches...

I usually just let them go...after they spray that "white stuff" all over me and the boat and everything within squirtin distance...
