    Default Spider Rigging

I know this may be a dumb question, but could someone please explain spider rigging? I never thought I would go long line trolling but love it once I hired a guide and he showed me how. I know with spider rigging you use a bunch of poles up front but other than that Im confused. Whats the advantages? Where do you try to spider rig? Deep Water? Over stump beds? In Creek Channels? On flats? What type of bait is used? I know you have to use long poles, but it seems like even with long poles the baits would come right back toward the boat. It seems to me you would stay hung up all the time. What type of speed do you push while spider rigging or do you just sit in one place? Do you have to add weight to keep the bait down? I know you fish the depth of where the fish are holding but typically how deep does someone or how deep can you fish while spider rigging? I know it's a lot of questions but if anyone can explain it, it will be someone on this board. I would really like to try this style fishing as I've heard it's really productive. Thanks

It might be easier to go on the main forum and do a search on spider rigging. You can probably read dozens of similar posts with hundreds of answers from some of the best in the nation. The basic premise will be the same but there are lots of little tricks talked about that will give you several methods to experiment with.

There are serveral ways to rig for spider-rigging. I use mainly 10ft rods, 6lb test line an 1/8 oz or 1/4 oz jig head and size "2" split shot about 18" above the jig. I also tip the jig with a minnow. The weight enables your bait presentation to remain verticle for the most part. I prefer to move slow (.2 to .5 mph) and work all the different areas you mentioned based on the water temps and time of year. The technique also allows you to gauge the depth of your bait more precisely.

    I use:

14ft Wally Marshall tightline specials ( yellow tip- for my eyes ) have had as many as 8 poles out front ,mainly use 4 you can find fish with your DF ( starting in deep water moving shallow-if water temps arent quite up there ) and once you have located them looking at your DF for there depth, use 1/8 or 1/4 (colored jig heads with a skirt -sometimes) tipped with a minnow and present bait 1-2 ft within that strike zone all poles at different depth to simulate a school of bait fish and hold on.......... -if you have to move- move slow I mean slow, for slow bitting I like to use crappie niblets as an added attractant...but what do I know ( smile) hope this helps ...boat control is the key .....hope this helps. This is just one way -not the only way to spider rig-
