Its ok to run it in summer if you are familiar with it, more water over the tree tops, but in winter you can see the channel and hidden trees better but I wouldnt wait till winter, some good fall/late summer fishing goes on up-river, you just need to trailer you boat to poppin-rock or bangor and you will already be launching way up river, then use the gps to idle or run slow to you spots, thats the safest way to do it the first few times.
