That's a pretty good summation of it. As it stands now, there seems to be no stated reason or cause. Back in the 90's the white bass population was hammered by this very disease, almost wiped them out. Honestly, I can't say this is directly harmful to humans, after all as you pointed out it's been ongoing for about a quarter century to my knowledge. Its not something thats been directly attributable to illnes as say B-G algae, but as long as it remains unidentified, who knows. Look at all the causes of cancer, many of which don't show up over night. It's not that bacteria/viruses/ fungi all cause cancer but more so the mutations to overcome illness which causes your immune system to become impaired leading to cancer. Immunizations work on viral infections and antibiotics are for bacterial infections. Once any of the 3 bacteria/virus'/fungi are in your system, they are there for the rest of your life. Chicken pox as a child leads to immunity from it (viral), however later in your life it also causes shingles. Simple things like this are the reasons for my concerns.
FishTaxi, Thanks for posting the B-G algae link. The water at Kanop is not compromised due to B-G algae, who knows, whats going on now might lead to it's immunity from algal blooms. Now that's an interesting thought in itself.
