This story reminds me of the time my lifelong friend ordered some floats. He thought he was ordering one of every kind of size and style. He was going to mount them on a display board. This was for a constant customers request for special type floats. Few of them could describe exactly what they wanted.
I happened to be over at his place when this small ? order came in. We were standing ouside and this semi rig parked in front of his house. The truck driver asked my pals name got it and then started off loading these HUGE boxes on his front lawn. My friend asked where did this come from. Truck driver replied with name of supplier. Meanwhile I open one of the smaller ( still big ) boxes. Stuffed to the gills of display boxes of Carlisle wooden bobbers.
Friend is in state of shock , I go into his shop and get catalog of supplier. Turned to bobber pages and at bottom of page in big bold lettering. ITEMS IN GROSS LOTS ONLY.
This was back in the late 70's he still has some ( thankfully few ) of this ancient order left. I think his original skin color took two months to return to normal. It also really put a crimp in his stocking SKU budget for his store for quite awhile. One good thing though if I needed a certain kind of float I knew exactly where to go.
