first jigs critique please

I am not looking for a pat on the back,I'm looking for info so i can
get better and better. I trimmed the feathers on one but not the
other. Is it better to trim or just let run wild? Have not had time to
try all the great dye info you guys sent that's why theres so much
white.,

I personally like the natural look at the tail of the jigs and NEVER trim the back end. You will want to measure the lenght of the tail before you tie it on the jig head. It just looks better with a natural end as opposed to a "Trimmed" end. Glad you like the CD.

Also, try and take a larger image of your jigs so individuals can see the detail on them. Having said all that....those will still catch you a few crappies.

Try closer pictures and cut on the Macro setting on your camera. Look around in the settings, you'll see it if you have one. Macro lets you get clearer pictures up close.

For the jigs, do what Ship said. Cut off the ends to the length you want, then tie those in.

That's better, but if those bodies are just wrapped thread, try using some chenille.

Smooth & Ship beat me to the punch........... Do what these 2 tell ya and youll be all set... But look at the way my jigheads are painted and you can add that touch to yours also..

I agree with smoothlures now that I can see them. These old eyes are not what they used to be......................Chenille is more cost effective and makes a better body IMHO.


Crappie Kid is right on target too. Do something to "Personalize" yours and make them different from every one else. A big old "Pop eye" works nicely. You can do this with different size drill bit ends.

Cut the feather length before you tie them so they look natural. Try not to need to cut after. Actually strip the feathers off the quill and stack them. Then pick them up and pinch about where you want to cut them and then tie them on.

I stop my body about at the hook point.

I gotta get some supplies like chenille and vise. is there a kit that you guys recommend to practice for a true beginner. I'm probably gonna try to stick with feathers since i have an unlimited supply but i would like to practice with some marabou and craft fur for the convenience.

The problem with kits is there is a good bit that you probably will never use. It would be better if you jug buy the colors you like in the material you want. Most sells in 1/4 oz packs or 1 Oz packs for marabou which is a lot. Craft fur comes in a size good enough and you can get this stuff at lots of places like Barlow's Tackle or Janns Netcraft. You can look on line with no problem. If you do get craft fur the one (probably the only one I use much) is the one that starts out black and ends up silver or white, not sure which it is.

So get what you want and my opinion is stay away from the kits.
