i got some new hackle flash from crazy angler today, had to play a little. What are some other uses? I also tried spinning some yellow bucktail, is deer belly hair easier? is there a pattern or tool for trimming feathers into tails?![]()
good lookin jigs
Those are sweet. I love the color combos on all of 'em. As far as feathers into tails, I believe lots of fellow use the "V" technique like in skips' slide show video up at the top of the page there, might wanna check that out for an idea. \
Top right is gonna be the slab catcher, betcha!

As far as trimming the feathers, all I can tell you is how I do it and others will probably give theirs too. I take a hackle feather and just barely open the scissors and cut the section from the end of the feather, being careful not to cut anything but the stem of the feather. Then I cut the next section the same way. I don't trim for the pointed effect, the tips of the feather has good movement to me. Then I cut the rest of the feather, until the stem becomes too thick into sections 1/4" or less and add these after the feather is attached. This adds a bit of body and improves the look of the jig. I also tie some jigs of nothing but the V's and they get an entirely different look. Bottom and top right are sure winners
Creativity is just intelligence fooling around
thanks for the advise guys i just love trying new material and methods for tying its even better when the fish eat the new or new to me stuff
Those will definitely catch fish!
To answer your question, belly hair will spin MUCH better than bucktail. Hairs from the very base of the tail will spin decent, but most of the tail will not. Much easier to get some belly hair if you're wanting to spin deer hair.
