Exclamation making jigs with little ones in the house

as yall know the wife and i just had a baby and now im wanting to continue making jigs and tackle but im not wanting any think getting to my little bundle of joy (lead hooks and etc..) as tackle maker i enjoy making and giving my friends and random people tackle made with love and care. i do all my pouring in the garage of my house and i tye all of my lures in my laundry room in my house i would do it all in the garage but it stays fairly cold in there this time of year and so im left with a question do i put off pouring jigs and making lures till he grows up or can i continue pouring and making tackle and still keep my baby safe from the harmfull effects of Lead? what would yall do?

i can go with out but i would rather continue my hobby but if in the best intrest of my new family i will stop and make that sacrfice

    i want yall oppion

i thought about buying an exhaust fan and installing in the garage over my pouring station but dont know if that would be enough protection
    thanks Crappie Josh aka C.J.

First how many jigs do you pour/tie? Can you buy enough to get by?
Second is it an attached garage?

You could buy tin and pour that. Lead fumes and dust are some bad stuff, I think I'd pass on pouring it with a baby around. Shouldn't be a problem tying it. Just keep the heads in bags in a Rubbermaid or something like you probably already do now.

I saw a video of a guy that repaints crank baits in his grudge. He took an oven hood and tilted it upright and vented it out the exterior wall at bench level for when he was painting. This might be an option for you. I'm going to be pouring myself and I'm going through the options as to where, heat source(for me) , power outlet, ventilation and lighting. Like you, I don't need to do it so bad that I'll go to an un-heated area. Tying is easy if you keep things organized and out of reach. Build yourself an outside man cave / business shop. Work outside and don't worry. Leave the baby inside. Be sure someone is watching the baby though.

I have a box fan in the garage window immediately above the work bench exhausting the air. I also run the fan when the toaster oven is curing powder painted jigs and when mending soft plastics with the soldering iron. It's on a plug strip that runs the fan at the same time as the iron or oven....using the plug strip switch only. A hood is highly recommended to draw the air through so I'm making a plywood hood on the bench for the fan. I don't pour lead, but occasionally sand a few jigheads to make them lighter.....wearing a dust mask for that.

Truthfully it shuldn't be a problem. Get yourself a space heater for your garage - it will keep you warm and keep your melter running okay. Follow all the safety procedures - get a pair of coveralls and wear them over your clothes, take them off before you go in the house and when you do go back in wash your face and hands thoughrly and you should have no problems.

I poured while my kids were little and they we'rent harmed by my lead pouring (they're now 24 and 22 - and both moved out). It all comes down to FOLLOW THE SAFETY RULES

I use to tie in house until grandson came along. I had to move out to an 8ftx8ft barn. Put in insulation and covered the walls. Added a stove hood for venting and heat with a ceramic heater. Shop will get to 80 if not keeping track of the heat. Do all of my lead poring, plastic injecting, jig and fly tying, and rod building in here. Cozy!
