Default What kind of mold to use?

I'm not sure if I need a barbed or collared mold. I have been using regular barbed heads and I finish the thread on the hook shank instead of the lead. It's easier to make jig look right. Is this the way to do it?

If it looks good to you that is all that matters.

I use heads both with and without collars. For chenille body jigs, I use no collar heads. Thread neck hair jigs I use collared heads and just smash down or grind off the barb on the led collar. I think thread body jigs can use either.... you can save on some thread in building up the body if you keep the led collar on.

You can tie off where-ever looks right for the jig you are making, but most on here probably use hitch knots or whip finish right up against the head of the jig.

Welcome to the boards from NW Ohio. You found a site with alot of knowledge!!!! From other tiers than me of course - I learned all I know from them.

I don't use any collar at all. All I have is the head and hook.

For me I would prefer either no collar or collars with no barb. I really like some I got from someone that had no barb but had a small bulb at the bottom of the collar. Allowed for some really nice thread heads and for getting a little extra flair on hair jigs.

Like most things in this hobby, get some of each and decide what you like best.

I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.

There is room for both in jig tying.I mostly use jigs without collars, but have a couple molds with ball or beveled collars which are great for tying marabou, bucktails and crafthair jigs. The collars keep the thread from sliding down the shank and gives a jig a fuller look.

I started out tying bucktail jigs for smallies and just cut the tip off the barb and used the nub to keep the thread from coming off. You can use both in your tying.

    Enjoy

Yes you can use collar with hair, but it's not necessary at all. None of mine have any collar.
