I use heads both with and without collars. For chenille body jigs, I use no collar heads. Thread neck hair jigs I use collared heads and just smash down or grind off the barb on the led collar. I think thread body jigs can use either.... you can save on some thread in building up the body if you keep the led collar on.

You can tie off where-ever looks right for the jig you are making, but most on here probably use hitch knots or whip finish right up against the head of the jig.
