I lived west of Deland for a few years and fished anything that held water in the dry periods and had a real good time in many of them. Caught some bass on a tiny popper bug up to about 5lbs, had no scale then. The quiet and remoteness makes it a very different experience.
Another lake I use to fish a lot in the forest was Lake Jumper. At the time it was only accessible thru a person's property located off Hwy 314A but I heard those people passed on and the lake was no longer accessible for awhile but I believe it's operated by the state now so it may be accessible now. I always caught bass on that lake, just not sure if it's good for crappier. Might have to look into it again one day.
