My dad built his first catfish pond when I was 5 years old so I reckon the first fish I caught was a catfish. I don't recall the actual first fish. I do know that at one time we were feeding 450lbs of feed per day in that one 3 acre pond. The fish were so thick you could almost walk on them when feeding. Since then, the hobby grew and we now have around 20 ponds to play with when I go home to South Alabama - filled with catfish, bass, crappie, and assorted bream. I hope to do some crappie fishing in late Feb. Over the past two years there have been some crappie over 3 lbs caught during the spawn. I'm usually down in the summer and the crappie are hard to catch because of the heat and relatively shallow water.

The first fish that I caught was when I was 5 or 6. My family and I were visiting my aunt and uncle in South Dakota. We were fishing for carp and big black bullhead in Lake Albert, which was practically in their back yard. I remember a picture of me standing up by their farm house with a stringer of huge bullheads. You only had to throw out your heavy 20 pound or more line with heavy weights and two hooks and more times than not you would get a bite right away and there would be a fish on both hooks. We used worms that we would find from underneath the straw and manure behind the barn. I remember one picture of me holding my broken rod with 2 large bullhead on it. Brings back fond memories.
It wasn't crappie, but it sure was fun! :D
the trick to catch that finnicky speck....
gently set the hook just before the peck

My first fish came when I was 9. I had never fished before, and either had my dad. I asked for a fishing pole, and so we bought one out of a man's basement my dad knew. We got our worms, had the plan, went through Hardee's drive-thru and got a bacon/egg/cheese biscuit before the sun came up. We went to a 600 acre lake (where I fish now for crappie), got on a paddle boat of someone we knew. We paddled out, tied on a bobber, sinker, and a treble hook. I made him bait my hook. I made the cast, and about 15 seconds later my dad asked me where my bobber was. It was gone. So I stood up in the paddle boat (NOT A GOOD IDEA), my dad jerked me back down, and I caught a 2-pound channel cat. He ended up catching a very small catfish. I have a picture of that, considering that was the last time my dad and I went fishing together up until about 3 years ago. Now, 20 years later, my dad and I share 4 days of crappie fishing on that lake, and I will treasure every minute of it. Take advantage of those times. You never know when you won't have them anymore. Needless to say, I really look forward to the first week in May every year. Last year we came home with 10 1gallon bags full of crappie fillets in 3 1/2 days of fishing.

Oh yeah...I have a boat now. I don't think I could paddle like we did that first morning. I have a motor, and a little more comfortable boat to fish on.
