    Default 798 fuse


    I just recently bought a 798 and did a search here on fuse size. From what I read up on, a 3 amp is recommended. Others from another forum recommended a 6 amp. What size would you recommend for the 798?

    I'd rather be fishing!

    I would recommend the 3 amp, that is what I am using for my 997, that is what the manual said to use. If you use a 6 amp I would think that you run the risk of "frying" something in the unit before the fuse blows. I would never go higher on the amp rating, it would be like using a 20 amp fuse to protect a 15 amp circuit in your house, the house may burn down and the fuse never blow.

    Use the 3 amp - fuses are cheaper than 798's!

    as far as I know HB recommends 3 amp on every thing they make. Cane Pole will know for sure.

    Yep. The fuse protects the wiring, not the unit. 18 gauge wire is safely fused at 3A. The fuse blows too slow to protect the units electronics. Some manufs units have reverse battery protection and overvoltage protection and some don't.

    This protection info is not in the user manual. 3A in all manuals that I have read on HB.

    Can somebody give me a link to the fuse setup you are using for your SI unit? The smallest one I've found was this at Gander Mt:

    I recommend this type fuse holder. I also recommend home running power and ground for the Head unit.


    Be sure to apply bulb grease to the fuse ends whichever you choose.

    I solder all permanent connections. I use the Western Union splice to join the wires. Also, I use dual wall heat shrink to seal the solder connection.

    I know this stuff.
