    Default Transducer leaking

I when out today and was looking at my other aluminum jon boat it has a 2D transducer mounted on the trolling motor and right around the temperature deal in the bottom of the transducer it is leaking something that looks and feels like black tar. Is this transducer going to be any good when I take it out fishing? Why would it be leaking as I have not even used this transducer very much and it is under a shed. Is it a heat deal or maybe it froze this winter I would like to know what I may have done wrong. I sure would not want my HDSI transducers to do the same on my other boat as they are pretty expensive to replace. Thanks for any help and information about this.

I would say it froze enough to crack it. Then when it warmed up today it started leaking. A lot of your older transducers were filled with a oil type fluid and that's probably what you have. I'd grab it off there, clean with starting fluid real good. Sand and cover with JB weld then give it a try.

Not warrantied as it is one of my older black and white units. I just don't use it because I am always using the other boat just wondering why they would go bad and not even using it. Like Cray said it must have froze or something. I may just start putting a sock or two on the HDSI transducers in the winter.

Inspect the cable "strain relief" rubber piece where the cable enters the xducer housing ...

These sometimes dry rot and crack, allowing water intrusion into the housing - which could then freeze and expand enough to Crack the housing ...

Water intrusion into the housing is not a good thing and could potentially short out a channel in the xducer ...

Shorting out a channel could potentially fry a transmitter in the head unit ...

It's best to replace the xducer ... just in case ...

If it's black goo - it is epoxy that wasn't mixed completely or properly, and it won't cure unless more catalyst comes in contact with it.

If you know where it's leaking, a quick set epoxy in the opening with stop it - but it needs to be in a heated place to get all the water out 1st.
