Then you've got better roads than what I'm used to traveling on

I take my (bow mounted) Lowrance Elite 5DSI off ... put it in a cotton bag ... and it rides in the back seat of the truck. My in dash HB 2d depthfinder stays where it is !! When I'm trailoring to or from the lake ... there aren't any loose items IN the boat, and everything that IS in the boat is in a locked compartment.

I do the same with my HDS units.

I keep mine in a padded pistol case at all times unless I'm fishing. I mount them in the parking lot at the ramp, and dismount them when I get back. They are too easy to steal.

I carry my mix of stuff in a brown bag. Ask bill bob. He's the "bag" man.

The hard cover for my HDS 8 is a PITA to remove as well, so its in the garage full time. I do turn the 8 parallel with the boat so there is less chance (maybe) of it catching a rock/debris on the road, but I never take it off the boat or off the Ram mount. I probably would if I stopped somewhere and the boat would not be in site for extended periods. The HB up front stays on, but is not high enough off the floor to catch anything. The TM kinda of protects it as well. I don't use the hard cover on the HB either, I can lay it face down on the floor since its on a ram mount as well.
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

Trailering, the one on the console behind the windshield stays on, and the bow mount comes off. Mostly, I worry about road debris catching the one on the bow. At a hotel, both come off; no use tempting anyone.
