Thread: new 998 unit problem

I am wondering if the image is from some turbulance of some kind instead of a blockage. Most of us get a little fuzz on the motor side of the image just from the motor passing thru the water even if it is off and the TM is pulling the boat. But I haven't seen turbulance this bad. Plus you said the motor was raised. Just a thought. I think the broom handle idea will tell you a lot tho if you try it, at least you will know nothing is in the way while you try that.

The more I look at the image the more I think turbulance because of the rough bottom(deeper) edge of the fuzz. Looks just like the fuzz something stirring the water up makes but on a much more severe scale. But at 1.4mph I sure wouldn't expect this much turbulance. Very interesting problem.

Thank you to all who has given trouble shooting issues to check. I have removed the 2nd transducer all together even the mounting bracket. I have tested the transducer on a piece of 1" x 1" x 3' long. I placed it in several different areas side to side, deeper range and shallower , I ever put the transducer along side the boat and it still showed the line. I also tried it with the motor shut down and the boat not moving at all so I was sure there would be no turbulence, same thing. I took a separate battery and ran the power cable to it all by it self and still had the line. I'm out of ideas and have tried all and anything suggested with no luck. I am now waiting for Humminbird to get back to me, they say they have sent the pictures and problem to their engineering dept. I'm sure I wont hear anything until after the holidays. Yesterday I took my boat to Green tops sporting goods where I bought the unit. The electronics guy told me that there was nothing wrong with the unit as he showed me 3 Humminbirds on display whit the same line while they ran on demo. I don't know what to believe at this point. Again thanks to all and if anyone has any further ideas please let me know.

If you know someone with a SI unit...(any size as long as its a HB SI)...

Try your head unit on their xducer...
Try their head unit on your xducer...

Either of the above 2 tests should give definitive info of if the problem is your head unit or your xducer...

The simulator data that the electronics guy showed you was taken from a boat that did have some Left Si sonar blockage. So it will look that way on all Si units that it is played back on (it is effect, a Sonar Recording that you are viewing while in the Simulator mode).

Don’t wait on the Engineers to come back from the their holiday vacations. Go ahead and temporarily install your HDSi transducer on something (a broom handle) and hold it completely under the boat’s hull and motor (with the boat drifting) as this will quickly show whether the problem is in the transducer or in the mounting of the transducer. Turning the transducer around backwards will also help identify the root cause of the problem.
- If the repeating lines go away from the left side than it is a physical blockage of the Left Si sonar and we will have to work on this.
- If they do not go away than the problem is either in your transducer or the unit itself. At that point you should test another Humminbird Si unit (any model as Rickie said) on your boat or your unit on another boat. This will let you know whether the problem is the transducer or your 998c Si unit.

If the problem is in the transducer; call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks, tell them what is going on and what you have done to troubleshoot the problem and ask them to ship you out a new HDSi transducer (XHS-9-HDSi-180-T).


BTW: you did register your unit with the Humminbird Select program, didn’t you?
