    Rickie is correct.

One other issue that you may run into if you were to use one of the DI units at the console along with your 1198c Si unit: sonar interference. The DI sonar in the 788ci HD DI unit is at the same frequencies that are used for the Si sonar in the 1198c Si units. You run the real risk of sonar-to-sonar interference when running them both at the same time with their transducers on the back of the boat. I’m like Rickie and think that the 788ci HD model in the dash will work better for what you are wanting to do.

BTW: try turning on and up the Noise Filter menu setting on the units you have now. This can sometimes be used to counter the sonar interference in the 2D sonar (does not help with the Si or DI sonar).

Thanks Greg, how about I use a 788ci HD up front with the US2 and if I use a 788ci HD in the dash can it share gps and transducer with the 1198 and share waypoints? If so, that would save a bunch. I have already tested the 1198 and the 998 and they seem to work great. Just went in and selected the 1198 transducer and gps on both units.
    Thx

Sounds like you have a plan now gene...

1 other thing I will mention regarding Ethernet and waypoints...just for info sake...

Ethernet in the HB units does not actually transfer waypoint data into the internal memory of the remote unit(s)...

Ethernet allows the remote unit(s) to "see" the waypoint data in the residing unit...

Two things must happen for multiple units to "share" Waypoint data...:
    1. All Ethernet connected units must be powered on
    2. All Ethernet connected units must be set to "Share Waypoints"

What this means is....if a waypoint is marked on your 1198, and you then turn "off" your 1198.... None of your other networked units will be able to "see" that waypoint that was set into your 1198...

This is different from the previous "Interlinked" units which physically transferred (copied) waypoint data from the residing unit into the Interlink and into the remote unit internal memory...

    Correct again Rickie.

    Gene,
If you have the 788ci up front Ethernet connected to the other two units you can share waypoints and GPS between all three units. Just know that to Ethernet connect more than two units together at the same time you will need to use the AS-ETH-5PS Ethernet Switch to do so.

Again, thanks for all the info. I got a cable and connected the 1198 and the 998 and had a great time looking at that setup. I did see what you said about the waypoints. Figured if I needed them on each unit for future reference or whatever, I would transfer them via SD card. Didn't see any other quirks, but I'm not totally set up yet. I've ordered some stuff and will work on it this weekend.. I'll post my progress.
    Thx

You know what? I ordered these cables and adapters to connect my 788, 798 and 1198 in the Ethernet network. They say these are for the 700 series HD units. Guess they didn't really try them because the cable ends wont fit the slot in the base of the 700 series. Who'd a thought that? May be dremel time....

Do you mean the AS EC QDE cable adapter end "will" plug into the back of the unit...but "will not" fit into the 700 base mount...??

One of your previous posts mentioned that your units were a 798ci SI Combo and a 788ci Combo...

Have you replaced these units with "HD" units to be Ethernet compatible ...("HD" in the model name)...??

    Rickie,
In his 11-26-2012 03:38 PM post Gene mentioned a “788ci HD up front” and a “788ci HD in the dash”. These units will have the Ethernet connection that the AS-EC-QDE adapter cable connects to.

    Thx guys
i did replace the units, I have a 798ci HD in the dash, a 788ci HD up front, a 998c SI in the back, a 1198c SI at the console. Got cables, adapters and the multi switch. I bought the 788 and 798 used and didn't have all the 'stuff' that comes in the box and the adapter cable will not go in the cable collector that was in the receiver I have. I could not fine anything on HBs site about it as I figured there was another collector somewhere.. I did find the info and now have to order those. I have connected everything without those temp. And stared testing. Looks like I need a software upgrade for the 788 it wont connect, but HBs site is down. My luck. Another problem I have not had time to research is, the 798 keeps giving me a 'sonar source lost' message. May also need upgraded software. If and when all this works, it'll be some kinda slick

    Gene,
The Connector Collector parts (these are what hold the cables to the unit mount) for the 788ci HD and 798ci HD Si units are different than the ones for the older non-HD 788 and 798 units.

I was not aware of any problems with the Humminbird web site but there could be. If you are still having problems getting the software updates; send me a direct e-mail asking for them and I will get you fixed up.
