    Question Jumpy GPS

I have a new HB 788 HD DI. Only 6 hours on it. Seems like it takes my unit a long time to acquire all the Satellites and it jumps around from .1 mph to over 1 mph while the boat is sitting still on the trailer. The 998 on the console stays locked down at 0.

Any ideas as to what my be causing this.

Wiskers, when the unit finally locks onto the satellites, what does the GPS Diagnostics View show for the number of satellites being tracked, the Fix Type and the Estimated Position Error?
Is the unit mounted so that there is nothing blocking the GPS Receiver (in the upper right hand corner of the unit) from receiving signals from the satellites?

I just installed this unit last time I was in off the boat (June). I have only had it out 1 time. It was doing the same thing when I had it out on the water.

I have it linked to my new 998 via Ethernet cable.

I updated the software on both units on the 6th. Both units have the 6.450 (I believe that is correct).

I took the boat out in the open & turned both units on. Total unobstructed view of the sky. The best I could get after 30 minutes was 7 to 8 satellites on the 788. Finally showed 3D FIX after awhile. The best error showed about 19 feet but hung in the 25' to 29' range most of the time.

I then went into my network settings & changed the GPS receiver over to the 998's. It then showed 11 to 13 Sats. and Enhanced with the best error being 2'.

I also have a problem with the Simulation Mode. When I hook it up to my power supply it doesn't show any depth or 2D or DI images. Everything else shows up. When I put it on its base and it's hooked up to the ducer, the Simulation works properly.

Get'n a little frustrated with this thing.

Wiskers, sounds like the internal GPS Receiver may not be working right. Try calling the Humminbird Customer Resource folks to get it straightened out. 1-800-633-1468

Woosh! That one went right over my head Cane Pole… It’s been a long time since I heard about Mexican jumping beans!

I thought it may have been a reference to some other company’s manufacturing locations.

I have a 788 ci HD, and the gps on my unit is jumpy at best too, and I get the donut/red circle when longlining at .5mph up to .9mph. The mph is seldom steady when compared to a garmin HH, which matches my Ipilot 99.99% of the time. I've gotten the donut from day one, and have the latest update, X.250 I think. Dont remember the "X" number.

How much "clearance" does the HB units with internal antennas need to lock in.

About 2 weeks ago, it took my 788 about 10 minutes or so to lock on, and still had the donut.
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.
