What voltage is the unit reading out to you? You can have 12 volts at the battery for the motor to crank but that doesn't mean it is getting to your GPS unit.
The first thing I would do is hook the FF up to a known good battery. I would hook it up at the mount to the FF, not back in the battery compartment. That would rule out the FF all together.
