The transmit radiation pattern for the Lowrance transducers will be as depicted by the red curve in the chart above, showing one side of the cross track beam pattern. The big ripples in the beam pattern near the 90 degree region (down) are caused by the downscan crystal interference with the side looking crystal. The interference diminishes as you approach 0 degrees (side). This interference causes the striped appearance we see in the Lowrance sidescan images. Via algorithms, Lowrance varies the amount of signal which is processed from each crystal with depth to minimize this interference. In simplified terms this involves the use of varied fan angles for each beam. When you see blocks of blank area, signal conversion is changing rapidly and the processors are temporarily overloaded in an attempt to minimize interference.
