won't it just show fish as little white specks in down scan?

crappie girl, your luck sounds bout like mine hope you get it worked out, but the fact is that as you well know buy now, both (Low and HB) mfg's can make problem units and you just must be the field tester for them I know it can drive you insane for sure. I just hope you get it worked out and you get to fish and dont have to spend any time on the phone with Low or HB, cuz time on the phone with cust support is time you could be fishing

I hate to say this, but I'd bet there is nothing wrong with the structure scan. I'm also thinking the 898 was a good unit. I would suggest taking your setup to a qualified installer to have it looked over by someone who does this for a living. I'm not trying to say your husband is not doing something right, but am trying to point you towards a final solution to your problems. As far as using the HDS7 in "down" mode, if the LSS-1 is not working, the only "down" mode you'll be able to get is on the sonar.
If you are not moving you will not see arches you will see lines near the bottom which are fish.

As for being able to see arches or fish, I would suggest reading this thread... HDS 7 Fish Arches | thenextbite.com

Also, what battery do you have your unit powered by? The trolling motor can cause interference if both units are on the same battery. I feel for youCrappiegirl1, but I also can't help feeling that your situation is something simple that is being overlooked.

I do wish you luck and hope everything works out for you soon.

pilot error in all likelihood. Get over the fish ID and learn to use whatever unit you decide on.

I think fish ID in both brands lie IMO....(unless it's an obvious school of fish)

The sonar doesn't know a single leaf ...from a limb tip...from a fish......

Find the structure...fish relate to structure...

there has been times when i have been responsible for pilot error. since the techs at humminbird, agreed the unit was not working properly, and knew i was taking it back, and since the techs at lowrance, walked me through the entire wiring process, to doublecheck the lss-1, then said it was faulty, and sent a pick up order on it from ups and sent out another unit, i think NOT! if i spend &1500.00 on anything, i want it to work as andvertised---FISH ID AND DEPTH is advertised! i have 30 some years at looking at fish symbols not arches and dont plan on changing now! thanks for your input, all suggestions are appreciated!

just as some have gotten familiar over the years looking at the arches--i have gotten familiar with looking at the symbols----course structure is important .

i have never seen fish symbols to lie as i have caught fish at the determined depth on the finder for years. i dont even see any arches
