Sometimes I get a short thin wavy line about 1/2in. long. Is that fish moving with the boat. Same speed so no arch.

Probably. Fish do not always show up as an arc as there are many things that have to happen for this to occur but a fish that is staying under the transducer will show as a line versus and arc. This can happen whether the boat is moving or stationary.
