LED's are semiconductor devices, not light bulbs. They are low current devices. If you hooked any LED across 12v without a current limit circuit, the LED would be destroyed.
LED's are rated in current not voltage. A LED can operate at just about any voltage (ac/dc) with proper current limits, usually a resistor.
I'm just providing some awareness of technology and terminology for the less fortunate.
