So does this mean that the 898 is another piece of crap that HB will abandon like they did the 797 that so many of us bought? If so, I'm going to change over to lowrance.

I'd have said that I was die hard HB for the last 5 years, but having my wallet thrown under the bus to many times will change that, and quick.

Aw man, I got a 797 too, and ain't real happy with what all's went on,
    and I'm watching Lowrance's progress too -

but 797 is still a pretty decent machine, and at least we can call H'bird
and talk to somebody, get a little affection with our reaming :D
Still not hearin much outta Lowrance's customer service.
That one poor woman that seemed to be the only one working there,
I heard on another site that they were forcing her to take her vacation
time off against her wishes even though her inbox is overflowing.
    What I heard, anyway.

There are no enforceable standards governing what the manufacturers claim on the side of a box. It a lot of BS talking points to add confusion. Big numbers look good, but, in some cases can hinder the performance of a unit. you know, kinda like putting a sprint car on a go cart track.

db ( in some cases) is a logarithmic measurement with respect to a known reference. In acoustics , db is is usually in Pascals. I don't remember much of this chit.

    Hereis the acoustic power wheel.

I have no idea where anyone came up with that 8X value.:rolleyes:

    New math???????

This is the way I lernt sound and it is still being taught this way. Must be Humminbird math.

I sure don't see any 8X in these basic formulas.

I agree with you Jwhite, the 797 does the job on a smaller scale, and will certainly show you what's under the water. It just seems like HB takes advantage a little bit. Bet that'll change some since they aren't the only guys on the block with SI.

    Cane Pole,
I’m not sure what formula was used for this (it’s been many years since I went through electronics school) but it’s the same 8x relationship that other manufacturers use in their advertising as well.

A politically correct answer, but I prefer facts.

I heard something similar on the news the other day: Bush did it too.

Nothing jives on any of the acoustic power wheels that relates to the 8x phenomenon.
