That looks insanely good. I'm sure it was delicious.

MANY moons ago there existed only a very few Tex Mex places ....
El Fenix was one of the first to show up on the horizon .....
They always produced pretty good food ...
not very spicy though and that lead the typical US citizens to like them bigtime ....
the older generations really liked them and still do .....
they are not as well known these days with the amount of pop ups in the paths since they started doing it , but a few still exist here and there .....
there is one not far from me in the old part of ft. worth ....
we stop by once in a while , its a never disappointing visit ....
a really big corona in a frosted mug with some lime slices is 7 bux ....
enough food to feed you twice was 14.50 ....
if you ever see one and are hungry you might consider stopping by ....
they still have them there "puffy" crispy tacos and I typically order one "chile toriado" on the side to bring on the heat .....just saying
not a crappie , but for darn sure good food stuffs ....
on a side note : they opened in this location in 1918 according to the website and started actually making tex mex in 1890 .....just fyi

This is exactly why Texas is my favorite place to eat. TexMex to me is it's own culture, culture food I could make a living on. I mean I could eat it everyday. What a good looking plate of fine food. If the place is a little old, all the better to me. I want Grandma's cookin' there anyway.

El Fenix - wow, brought back some memories, probably close to 40 years ago. We drove far to the closest big town just to eat there. Big ordeal at the time for a real treat - drive a hour, eat, then drive home. Didn't know they still exist. El Chico still around?
I get my fix here off the food trucks we have. The Chicanos here flat out know how to cook it right. One I go to makes the best Chile Rellenos, another the best Tres Leches for dessert.

Don't I know. We would drive up to their fields one a year to pick them. Pick them in the fields yourself for 25 cents a large brown grocery bag full. Remember brown grocery bags? Roast, peel, and put them away for the year.
They also had fields of Jalapeno peppers. Same price of 25 cents a bag to pick yourself. Interesting was that they had different fields labeled mild, medium, and hot. The heat intensity dependent upon how much irrigation water the field received.

I remember way back when sometimes , the family would hit one sometimes as a treat in the big town , they used to have a chile con queso thing , not sure if they still do , it was one of them puffed up like a baseball shells with a hole poked in the top and filled with what at the time seemed like real queso , still remember them things ,,,,,![]()
