    Default Boat Control

I've fished out of a small john boat for years. Not long back, my wife broke down and let me buy a 17.5' G3 decked out. I'm loving it.

But, I have a "silly" question. How do you keep control over a very precise spot that the fish are holding on? Wind loves to play havoc with me and I was curious as to any tips ya'll might have in this regards.

    Thank you,

    Fred

P.S. Spider-rigging is next on my list of accomplishments.

Jerry Blake has written an article about his method called "Hovering". The biggest lesson I got from reading it and fishing near him is to throw your marker up wind from your target. Then I try to keep my spot by keeping my target between me and the marker. I will drift back and forth.
But, I ain't an expert at it.

    Hmmmm. Interesting.

Thinking on this, I actually think I can keep "on target" better with my 19' Lowe Stinger than I ever could with my old alum boats. Heavier maybe? I dunno.......bigger Trolling Motor helps (Maxxum 70 lb).

Course, the guy in the back of the boat whines and complains all the time about being slung all over while I'm doing it!!! I just told him to go buy his own boat!!!

That said, I HATE wind. I hate it!!!!

X2. I have a 16-42 Ouachita flatbottom. Even a slight wind makes it impossible to stay on position. I dont believe in anchoring, so my tm is usually working non stop. This probably affects my catch rate some.

I toss a marker as close to my cover as possiable. Use trolling motor set on lowest speed I can to hold close enough down wind to stay on it. Some boats hold better than others, my 16' x 48'' Aluma Weld easy to control with my Minnkota Maxxum 70 lb foot control. That variable speed motor is great for this , it has infinite speed control.

I just tried to find it for the OP and was unsuccesful. Maybe it was a thread?
I use a graph on the bow and stern. Since I am in a stick steer, I have them placed so I can watch both at the same time. When I can see my spot (brush) on both of them, I know I am directly over it. This is best when two or more are in the boat. It is a method I picked up from Jerry Blake. However, since I fish alone more than not, I like to throw my marker up wind from the pile and keep the pile between me and my marker. I stick my presentations into it from the front of the boat rather than the side. I am also mindful of where the boat shadow is. It can spook the fish off of the spot. I don't worry about none of that anymore. I just cast my jigs or Bandits out as far as I can then drag them around.
Dang, I think I sound like I at least knew about how to fish---when I used to get to do it.

No expert but a good trolling motor is a must,A marker, and fully charged marine batteries for the trolling motor 24 or 36 volt if you can afford one and lots of pratice on the water.
