Never heard it about bass, but sure have about crappie.
Cork laying on its side usually means they hit it on the way down, it never got to full depth. It also means "SET THE HOOK".When that happens, I just shallow up the cork a tad, a little at a time, and see if they are shallower. I love shallow crappie fishing, but the dang things seem deeper than I am fishing more than they seem to be shallower. I haven't charted that, just something that 'seems that way' to me.
