Just wanted to make a comment on my various JDM reels. This spring has taught me that my two best reels are the ABU Zenon and the ABU MGX Theta. They are outperforming my two Luvias reels and the Ballistic reel from Daiwa.
It is interesting, never really thought ABU would outpace Daiwa in the spinning reel department, but for my money, it's ABU!
Reels have been here in Memphis since yesterday but delivery is scheduled for Wednesday.
They’re here! I’ll unbox them later this evening.

Here are some unboxing pictures. I was a little disappointed that it didn’t come with a case like the Zenon - but it’s not a big deal.
Reel looks great, super light, and spins easily imo. I’m sure it will work well with the Lunakia rod.

I know it would look good with any of mine. Glad they got there unscathed. Get em wet soon……
Has anyone been charged customs/import fee on any JDM tackle?
Got a $43 invoice from FedEx on the two Vanquish reels I ordered from digitaka. It’s not the end of the world but it’s something I haven’t dealt with before.
I’ve been ordering things overseas for about 3 years now and this is first time I’ve been hit with customs charge.

Only once about 8 years back. It was on a rod shipped by FedEx. It was not a one piece one but did not come in under the 155cm mark that was the max length EMS would ship…so they sent it by FedEx. I don’t remember the exact bill I received but it was not much. I know if you get one piece rod you will get hit with that. I suspect in your case it was the value of two Vanquish reels that triggered the duties. I have ordered a ton of gear over the last 13 years or so and that has been the only time I’ve been hit up for fees. I’ve never had a single order over 500 dollars. Not sure what the threshold is for charging customs but sounds like you hit it.

TXPanfisher,
I am the last person who should be replying to your post , however recently made my first JDM purchase and will put this info out there as it may help someone else.
Seller/Shipper: Amazon Japan
Order date: 5/25/23 Received: 6/4/23
Regular Amazon acct.( no prime)free shipping over $25.00 ( Amazon did not estimate custom/import fees and policy states they will not charge if over estimate.)
Purchase: Majorcraft Finetail Glass 4'10" spinning rod $134.06 +$8.04 State Tax
Before making purchase I looked at prices on this rod on Japan sites and could not touch it (IMHO) anywhere near what Amazon charged. However, not into tech stuff, don't even use credit cards online (use Amazon gift cards for purchases) so take this for what it's worth. Did not see the reels you purchased but they do carry quite a few of the higher end ones on their site. I would assume most are aware of all this stuff, but some of us older folks, well, it takes us awhile.
Nice find, moon. Please let us know how it fishes.
Bob
I was aware of this possibility but have not experienced this in the 3 years of ordering stuff online.
I suspect Randy is correct in his assumption.

On using Amazon Japan .
Just make sure you want what you’re ordering. Amazon’s return policy is different from ordering and returning here in the US .
I’ve been waiting three weeks for a return that’s sitting in a UPS warehouse in Tokyo . They scan it almost daily , I don’t know why they won’t deliver .
I talked the UPS , they said call Amazon , called Amazon , they say it’s UPS and customs.
i bought my 2 vanquish reels the next day after you from digitaka, recieved my reels the day after you as well, same models and i also bought 2.
yesterday i got a bill from fed ex as well, 43.36, i have been buying things from digitaka and other sites from japan, my jig heads came from asian portal.
this is the first time i have had to pay anything like this is well, kind of sucks, with a discount code and points i had saved up from digitaka, it negated my savings.
Thanks for this info. Good to know there is a threshold limit on Customs.

I ordered my exist and some metal jigs from digitaka and they shipped FedEx and I believe the bill was 700 plus but no invoice from FedEx. Makes me wonder what the threshold is and for the record I can’t stand FedEx. I never could get them to deliver without a signature and I had to travel to FedEx facility around 30 minutes from my house to pick up. Said if I didn’t pick up within 3 days they would send it back.

Well I think for the money you can't get that quality of a reel from any other manufacture. I just wish I had bought more when the yen was really weak against the dollar. I'm not hung up on a particular brand. I know Victor personally and he is all about Shimano reels. The Vanquish is a fine reel but it is about 130 bucks more than the Zenon. A 20 inch trout can really test a drag and the drag on the Zenon has the best I have seen. But to answer your question, Abu Garcia has closed the gap on Daiwa and Shimano. I just hope they continue on. Will be nice to see if they come out with a reel that really competes with the Stella and Exist. Time will tell.
Regards
Decided to keep the reel. I was going to move the zenon on in order to get a new reel, but will hold on to it for now.
FYI, fishingshop.kiwi has the zenon 1000 and 2000 for $238 and I believe they have free shipping now for orders over $200
Zenon buy now, price start from US $237.94
Cheers

not a lot of action around here lately. anyone check out the airity st?
One of my buddies pre ordered one of the versions. I am thinking about getting the 1000 size exist sf. So that has me holding off right now.
I preordered the ST SF 2000SS-P. plan to pair it with a presso 61L.
Think I’m going to order a Vanquish C2500S to pair with my 75 Lunakia for bass fishing with ned rigs. Likely will put 4 lb line on there.
Thoughts on this setup? Or anyone have another reel suggestion?
Cheers!

My thoughts are you wont go wrong with that reel.

That setup will work. I do prefer a 2000 size reel for that rod with 4 lb. test mono. As you know, the 75 Lunakia has enough backbone at the butt to set the hook on a Ned rig bite, but still bends nicely up top to protect light line. I mostly use an Exist 2505 with 5 lb. test mono line for 1/8 to 3/16 oz. lures on the 75 Luna now.
Just a heads up digitaka is stocking the airity ST. Havent checked the other retailers yet. Got a FC ST 1000p on the way to pair with my 610 lunakia
For those who have the 6’7” Eradicator, what reel are you pairing it with? Upon purchasing the rod, I paired it with it the 1000s Abu Garcia MGX Theta. That reel weighs 163 grams. I’m curious what the sweet spot weight wise is for the Eradicator. I started to wonder if the MGX theta weighs too much for the rod.
Your thoughts are appreciated!

I had it paired with an MGX Theta and it felt fine. Caught a lot of fish with that setup and made thousands of casts with it. Sold that reel then strapped a Zenon on it and it also felt fine. While you can certainly tell the weight difference with the Zenon both reels balanced well. It is designed to handle 1000 and 2000 series reels.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve put it on a 23 vanquish as well and enjoyed it.
Thanks Randy. I haven’t fished it with zenon yet but might give it a try. Is that pretty much your go to now for the eradicator?
Cheers

I have no idea what that rod or reels are. What I found out for myself years ago is that there are a lot of rod and reels that will work fine, just find one that appeals to you. If that rod is an ultra light rod, I'd only look at UK reels. Also on UL rod and reels I like a max 4 pound line and when I can find it 2 pound. Should give you an idea on the rod what the rod will handle. What is not good is chasing someone else's idea of good. Go look if you can and handle it a bit and it will probably grab you or it won't. Don't be fooled thinking if it cost a lot of money it's just right. An expensive rod slammed in a door or stepped on breaks just like any cheap rod.
