Consult with game and fish people
None of us seem to know why the law is stated as it is. There must be some logical reason why the law-makers wrote the law about limits, lengths, number of rods, etc. The fact is, there are very few laws that are written that are intended to harm us (except taxes, or course!). I sympathize with the fishermen and fisherladies and fisherkids who drive long distances for a lengthy trip and who boost the local economy at any lake. I have not read any publicized study from fisheries biologist (ichthologist?) that states that crappie is becoming an endangered species at Lake Weiss. I have read that they continue to stock 100's of 1000's of crappie into the lake each year and the crop seems to be productive each year. This year seems to have been really tough due to changing weather patterns and such, but I must admit, I have been fairly successful, and it doesn't seem to be a problem for me, living in Georgia 2 hours away. I usually fish with a buddy and we seldom ever catch 60 keepers, being very careful to keep only 10+ inches. I hate it when I have to release a small fish that is throat-hooked. But I have heard that if you just cut the line at the hook, the hook will disintegrate, and that is what I do. The gulls get their share also from throw-backs. I say just honor the law until they decide to change it. More and more people are into fishing nowadays, and they may decide to lower the limits on numbers of fish taken and in possession. So enjoy while you can! Perhaps someone will consult the fish and game people to get their take on this and inform them of the concern some have, especially out-of-state people who drive long distances and stay in the motels and spend their money in Alabama restaurants, shopping, etc.
