Sure didn't offend me.....I just think some of the laws are hard to understand the reasoning. Mainly the rod limit and the one day posession. Can catch 30 a day but only take one days catch across state line. Can also catch 30 per day but limit you to the number of rods you can use. How can either of these laws help the fishery? If limits need to be cut down then cut limits down.

    Default law on possession limits

Wow, I love these discussions on limits, particularly possession limits.

Most states (not all) actually define possession as being all fish at any location (including freezer at home, not just while "at the lake" or in the field).
That being said, possession limits do not relate to who caught the fish. For example, In my household there are five occupants. Four of us regularly crappie fish. My 16 month old "little slab" is a future fisherman. Under our regulations, I could legally possess 300 frozen crappie in my freezer. They could be caught over time, or given (donated) by a legal fisherman. (FYI: if you give fish or game away, always tag it with your name address and license info., especially when you give it to non-licensed eaters) I don't think that I have ever gotten close to that limit b/c we eat fish at least once per week.

Interesting rule, prohibiting leaving the state with more than one limit. That is pretty prohibitive.

    Very interesting.

Interesting discussion on the fishing laws. To weighin I would point out the following:

Agree that if those fellas were keeping undersized fish--slap it to them.

The number of rods would be " in use" not necessarily "in the boat" correct? I always carry more rods than I use. Different baits, line weights, ect.

Possesion--I have been going to Weiss for years and never have heard of anyone getting checked. Good point that if it started most businesses around the lake would suffer--especially all those hotels that freeeze your catch everyday.

    Good discussion.

    Default Alabama or Busted

I've fished all my life. Most of my fishing has been in farm ponds, small lakes and the Ky river. I fish for anything that bites. I just love to fish and catch.I have some friends who have been comming to alabama fishing for at least 25 years. I was invited to come with them for years. But,I always had to work or thought I did,or didn't have the money for the trip. Until four years ago. I was invited and decided to take the trip. That was a mistake. Now I'm Hooked. It was the best fishing trip I ever had. So, for the last four years I've been making the trip. The last two years I took my brother-in-law. Now he's Hooked. From where I live round trip is about 900 miles and from where he lives he comes to my house and we come together it is about 1800 miles for him. It seems kind of foolish to come that far for 60 fish. But' I sure do enjoy fishing the waters of Alabama.I'm just sorry I didn't make the trip years ago. I can't speek for all Ky people. But, we have know intention to come down and (rape as some call it) the lake's of Alabama. We come to fish,be together, have fun and enjoy what time we have left on this earth. Life is short , make the best of it. Got to go.Thanks for listening.

KY#30, well said. I made my first weiss trip this past april and it will not be the last. I live 2 hrs north in TN and the brother lives outside Atlanta. Equal travel for both. Both in our 50s we grab any chance to spend a little time decompressing together. I get fish all the time, and sent all we caught home with him. Not even 1 limit due to the weather. But what a great 3 days it was.
Now to the subject of the limits and penalties. I have always done my best to play by the rules. I admit to keeping a couple of extra due to being braindead and trying to count swimming fish, almost impossible. But flagrant abuse of limits and size deserves a stiff punishment. And if they get lippy with the officer doing the bust, sock it to em. When in the FL Keys once, I saw a guy get busted for 15 short lobster. He was half drunk, and could have been busted for DUI on the water, not well tolerated down there. He also had his wife, toddler, and infant along. He got mouthy and belligerant, then took a poke at the officer just as backup arrived. Cofiscated his motor home, where some of the shorts were in the freezer. And the boat after they ran it up on the trailer cockeyed, and gave his wife just a few minutes to gather up a few things for her and the kids before departing with all the gear and the guy on his way to jail. I don't even want to know what it cost him to get out of that and get his stuff back. This is what the possum cops have to deal with on occasion, and abuse should be punished harshly to discourage others from thinking"they won't get me.
I'm down off my soap box, sorry for being longwinded.

This is one of the longest dissucison I can remember seeing on any website.

I checked on the regulations for a few states where I know people come from to fish Weiss Lake. Alabama's law is not a lot different here is a few examples.

Georgia 30 a day and 30 in possession for non residents, Kentucky 30 a day, 60 in possession and Tennessee 15 a day could not find a possession.

All states have some crazy laws and this may be one of them. But the only thing we can do is have the law changed or abide by it.

It is our respondiblity to check the regulations for the state that we are going to be in fishing or hunting. Then if we break the law it is our on fault.

Just think about what a great country we live where we can disscuss and complain about the laws we don't like and we don't have to worry about or goverment excuting us.

    Thank God for the U.S.A.
    and have a good day.
