I fish Neely Henry, Weiss, and Guntersville 4 or 5 times a year often I keep my legal limit of crappie on each of these lakes. I know for a fact that myself and others like me help the local economy by spending my money in local restaurants, grocery stores, motels, gas stations, and bait stores. I never keep small ones and always am vry cautious about keeping over my limit. Alabama loves tourists. I believe that is why they'll never pull over vehicles to check how many fillets are in their cooler. If they do start doing that, maybe somone should go to the bathroom with me and see that I dont potty too much in the toilet..... thats Alabama water in there too.

The way I look at it if you go by the rules and regulations then you have nothing to worry about. If you break the law you have to pay. Plain and simple!!

Default Consult with game and fish people

None of us seem to know why the law is stated as it is. There must be some logical reason why the law-makers wrote the law about limits, lengths, number of rods, etc. The fact is, there are very few laws that are written that are intended to harm us (except taxes, or course!). I sympathize with the fishermen and fisherladies and fisherkids who drive long distances for a lengthy trip and who boost the local economy at any lake. I have not read any publicized study from fisheries biologist (ichthologist?) that states that crappie is becoming an endangered species at Lake Weiss. I have read that they continue to stock 100's of 1000's of crappie into the lake each year and the crop seems to be productive each year. This year seems to have been really tough due to changing weather patterns and such, but I must admit, I have been fairly successful, and it doesn't seem to be a problem for me, living in Georgia 2 hours away. I usually fish with a buddy and we seldom ever catch 60 keepers, being very careful to keep only 10+ inches. I hate it when I have to release a small fish that is throat-hooked. But I have heard that if you just cut the line at the hook, the hook will disintegrate, and that is what I do. The gulls get their share also from throw-backs. I say just honor the law until they decide to change it. More and more people are into fishing nowadays, and they may decide to lower the limits on numbers of fish taken and in possession. So enjoy while you can! Perhaps someone will consult the fish and game people to get their take on this and inform them of the concern some have, especially out-of-state people who drive long distances and stay in the motels and spend their money in Alabama restaurants, shopping, etc.

You are missing the obvious- Keeping fish for personal use is not the question. Very few people who come to any lake in Alabama are ever questioned about the creel limit in the freezer. I have many friends who come here from Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, and Missouri every year and stay for a week to three weeks and never are questioned about how many fish they have. The question to my friends in Kentucky, Tennessee and many other states is this, Why do you think that people keep thousands of fish from all over the United States? Particularly those who fish the tournament trails? I have fished the tournament trails since 1985 and there are a select few who keep 4 to 5 large commericial coolers in the back of their trucks for one reason, to keep as many crappie as possible for one and only one reason, RESALE. This is a quite, rarely ever spoken about behavior, but it has been going on and it continues to go on regularly. If you do not believe that there is a market for fileted crappie then you have blinders on. It happens, it has been happening, it will continue to happen until the penalty becomes so prohibitive that it is not worth the risk. Ask any seasoned tournament fisherman and the will tell you the same thing, If they do not they are missing the obvious.

I'll agree with the law,on this,But It say's ( BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF THE STATE.) the way that reads they would have to wait untill you went past the state line before they could make an arrest,Now you know why I'm not a lawyer,:D.
I enjoy fishing in Ala I lived there for 11 years before moving to Georgia
(Mistake) I pay $50 for nonresident license and we stay over a couple of days at a hotel they charge enough for not living in Ala ( no complaint) I should be able catch the limited each day that I fish

Simple matter...sorta. Obey the current law then have it changed. Write your AL State congressmen (person) and say this is a stupid law since AL promotes fishing tourism. If a tourist comes to our State for multiple days and is lucky enough to legally do well over multiple days, they should be able to take their catch back to their home State.

Fishing is a privilege...catching is a bonus. Enjoy each precious moment we have to experience our great outdoors!

If they are going to another state to fish, they need to learn the laws of that state or keep their hind ends at home. Who cares how far they drove.
