I used to make an annual trip to Weiss in late Feb every year but the group we went with fell apart and another group formed and we started going to Ky Lake. For the most part we venture to other lakes for a change of scenery and the challenge of fishing new waters. At this time of year I'm also looking for some warmer weather, I'm so tired of being cold.
It's common to blame the overharvest on all the out of state guys but honestly most of us are there for only a few days each year and it's been my experience the bulk of the harvest is from the locals who are on the waters and can keep up with the changing patterns. Unless we hire a guide (that's boring to me) we are starting from 0 and it takes a few days to put a pattern together. On almost all trips we catch more fish on the last few days of each trip.
Personally I'm like you guys and think most states should increase the size limit AND decrease the possession limit. To me a 15 fish limit is plenty giving a person 30 fillets is more than enough. I don't get people who have to keep every legal fish they catch nor do I understand the guys who have to have a freezer full of fish or they guys who take it upon themselves to feed their whole communities.
With all that being said we are making a return trip to Weiss again this year at the end of March. I'm really looking forward to revisiting the area and hopefully we can make it down to Neely Henry for a day or 2 (never been there) to see what it's like. I can assure you that I know for sure we won't be taking anymore than a 1 day limit home with us even though we'll be in the area for 5 days. I just hope we can find a little sunshine to help warm my bald spot and catch a few fish.
