    Default Hook size for Gills

When I refer to gills , I’m referring to all panfish , bluegills, shellcracker, redbreast , etc. .

What size hooks are you using for “gill” fishing ?
Do you think a size 6 hook is going to keep me from hooking the more average size gills 5”-6” ?
I enjoy catching the little guys almost as much as I do the bigger ones .

Found me some 1/32oz jig heads with size 8 hooks .
Going to give them a try .

I use a #6 and I think it might slightly hurt my hookup ratio even though every gill where I fish seems to be over 8".

In your shoes I'd go #8 at the most, but a #10 may be more appropriate.

    I prefer a size 8 or 10. I find I get a much better hookup than when I use a #6

Thanks guys for the replies .
I prefer a size 10 or even a 12 most times. But it’s hard to find poured heads in a 1/32 in those hook sizes and if I do the hook is low quality and usually short .
I have used streamer hooks with the 4.6mm tungsten beads and my ties weigh in at .87g .
I like the Mustad Ultrapoint hooks and Waspi uses these in their Super jigs , but they use a size 6 in a 1/32 and thought that was a little big .
I guess I need to find a mold that work with the #8 hooks in a 1/32 jig head and try my hand at pouring my own .

I buy a 1/32 size 8 hook from Panfish Pro that works well with the trout magnet, Mr. Twister 1" grubs and Cubby Mini Mite plastics that I use. They come in various colors with a high quality enamel finish.

I like a 1/32 head with #6 hook when possible, helps reduce the swallow jobs. Otherwise i use a #6 Aberdeen, #4 when catching big gills and shellcrackers.

I was going to say 8s or 10s specifically on micro poppers. Trebles that is..

Victor's (ifish) jigheads are available in 1g with #10 and 12 hooks, probably the easiest and almost certainly the highest quality option in the US.
