I posted this awhile back in the Fly Fishing forum. It applies to spin fishing, too.
What's Out There to Fly Fish For?
As I was growing up in Oklahoma's warm waters, all I had to fly fish for was bass and sunfish. Nothing had spots except an occasional accidental channel catfish! There were no trout, no grayling, no salmon... poor Okie from Muskogee, I used to think. My young brain had been tattooed from reading magazines, books, and catalogs that fly fishing wasn't fly fishing unless I was wading a cold, clear stream where colorful, spotted torpedoes broke the surface for graceful, sail-winged, blue dun colored, floating mayflies. Oh, to be among the privileged trout and salmon fly-fishing elite!
Well, I got an education, a job, vacation time and joined the 'real' world of fly fishing back east, up north and out west! It was fantastic! Then when I was about 30, I started to change my thinking. Why? Well, for several reasons. First, two or three weeks of 'real' fly fishing a year was just not enough. It was also becoming harder to find and more expensive, plus my wife and kids were learning to fly fish and needed more of my time. At that point, I had also begun considering an occupation change from petroleum research to ...fly fishing!
The more I thought, remembered and looked around, the clearer it became to me that almost at my doorstep there was an abundance of cool and warm water creeks, rivers, ponds and lakes loaded with wild game fish that we could access after work and school and on weekends or holidays. So we began to revisit some eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas past favorite spots and explore new ones. Every place was a new adventure, and with just a few tackle and fly modifications, we caught an amazing variety of fish on flies. There were largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, white bass, blue gill, green sunfish and at least eight or 10 other species of sunfish! But that was just the beginning. I also caught drum, sauger, channel catfish, carp, chubs, gar, bowfin, fresh water herring, shad and bullfrogs! What fun! All these species have their own special qualities.
So, do yourself a favor this season. If you haven't already discovered the other, more abundant fun part of fly fishing, those warm and cool water, fresh and salt water fish that'll gobble your fly, try them out in your 'home' waters. Chances are, you'll find more elbow room, have more success and perhaps even more fun fly fishing...and definitely more often.

That's key to catching more and any size fish. I you search my user name you'll see the many lures I've modified that anyone can that have caught 3" bass to 7 1/2 lb catfish. If you own soft plastic lures the sky's the limit ! No bull! It's a wonder few anglers take up the challenge of making/ modifying lures that catch most species.

Well said DBD. My fervor for most anything with fins started early and was pursued with little funds. I’ve been caught sitting with a smile on my face as I think of some of the times I’ve had in the past. So much so that some folks are convinced I’ve already started ‘round the bend. Doesn’t have to be a giant whatever to be a trophy.
Creativity is just intelligence fooling around
Couple of days ago I might have started a quest unbeknown that there’s no simple formula for: the perfect UL rod action and power for taking not minuscule but average size fish most of this forum members will not think twice tossing it back in the water as catfish bait, but for me it’s game fish fun chasing nonetheless. So last couple days even this valley heat wave (114 all week) couldn’t keep me out an hour here and there trying to catch something worthy of putting up a good bend...no such luck..lol. 3 different ponds including a small lake in Boulder City NV all over grown with vegetation...
...so hope you all like the pictures and if my assessment is correct and pictures speak a thousand words I think the rod at hand is simply a fast/extra-ultra light just because it’s pretty parabolic in the upper 1/3 section. Thanks for all the chime-ins!

This is a good book, if you can track one down. They only printed 300 copies -- and one belongs to me.

That's a common problem this time of year but, with a light pole, you can drop a bait into holes in the vegetation. My lightest is perfect for fish like you're catching. I posted a report last year:

Cool LV ! Man that's some bend caused by such small fish! I carry 3 different rods and none have the same action though labeled light action. Who cares as long as I get good casting distance using 1/32 oz + lure wt. and strike detection/good hook sets at a distance.
Amazing the record heat you have been experiencing ! I also still went fishing when I lived in Texas many decades ago when summer temperatures reached over 90 on a daily basis. Funny though, I don't even remember what I caught fish on (rod/ lures) except one very large gar on a Little Joe type tail spin plus using stink bait for catfish.

Hi, DBD thanks for the info on this rod and the Amazon book will definitely check them out! I also visited the sight you mentioned in a post: Roughfish.com, very interesting! If im not mistaken they refer to this kind of fishing in the UK and Ireland ( very limited amount of fishable waters compare to us)...as course angling. It's like multispecie and microfishing roling into one..lol. I think i'm qualify in some way just by the size and the limited species of fish i caught here over the years. Is it against forum rule to share pictures of catch non relating to panfish species...like something from a pier but UL rod and line?
Yes, in the UK, they have coarse angling and game angling. "Game" refers to trout, salmon and grayling. "Coarse" is everything else.
There's no rule against it, but some pics might be better suited for other sub-forums (like the Saltwater forum.) Nobody's gonna yell at you, no matter where you post.![]()
