Hey LV, my only purpose fishing is to uncover new lure designs that po fish into striking, knowing full well that staying with one color/one lure can do the same thing equally on any given day (my partner is proof). When a new design works (and it usually does for all species in a lake), it feels like I'm catching fish for the first time with that rush we all experience from the strike to in-the-boat or on shore. In fact numbers though nice, don't matter near as much as proving something works. Only 36 fish caught yesterday but most caught on new stuff. On top of that is digging old lures out of storage and finding they still have it - especially if modified.

One thing I'd like to add is that there is no standard for what qualifies an UL or L or anything between brands. Each brand has its own distinction for that. So an UL from one brand might be equal to a L from another and that light might be equal to a ML from a third brand. Same goes for fast action and all that stuff. I used to just buy the cheap combos from Walmart, but recently decided to get more specified stuff. There's some really good YouTube reviews of how different rods compare to one another. I would check out i_fish. He does a great job at being thorough.

Ketchn, I absolutely agree with you, with this thread i didn't mean to start anything at all maybe mentioning equipment country of origin is bad idea just like debating who's a better football team..lol. I also like to add that I like your- "doesn't matter what you ketch as long as you ketch something is great fun" attitude toward fishing in general. It is true because that's how i feel in my home waters majority of the time all i can fish for, these little 6" gills and greenies. I found myself reading lots of thread here in this forum for that simple reason, folks seem to have a positive outlook in life being just themselves and fellow anglers.

Hi, Arthur very true indeed what you just said. What makes it more non-universal about the standard is that almost all foreign rod companies don't print action of rod on the blank. I remember in the old days me and buncha friends used to chase saltwater striped bass and sturgeon around the San Francisco golden gate area with various rods including a boat broomstick with rolling guides and all..lol. We didn't think twice about what power or action those rod are or the "purists" would have thought if they saw us with those! We just want the get those yummy sturgeon (ahem...the legal size one of course) on the dinner table. All humors aside I didn't know much about technical aspect of a rod actions or think much about it until the recent years when the BFS finesse craze started by bass fishermen its when all fishing forum the world over was talking about..."curiosity kill the cat!" In short, I feel this forum can help classify the said rod I just purchased and that's why the chart and demo photos. After much reading i do come to a conclusion when phrase "noodle" is used to describe UL rod it means parabolic in nature regarding its action. thanks for the reply!

Nothing wrong with that. There's another site called "roughfish.com" that celebrates fishing for fish that are not the "glamour" species. As I said before, I love to fish for carp and would rather catch them than almost anything in freshwater. As a friend of mine used to say, "Catch what's in front of you." Don't worry about the species.

A Lot of truth to that one, DB4D. That is a good one to remember along with “if you’re thinking about and looking at that next bend in the stream, go fish it because you’re not doing any good where you are” - and “take what fish the water gives you and be happy”.
